Where does our Courage come from?

1 Samuel 30:6 And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.

David and the men with him have just lost everything. They had gone off to a battle and while they were gone, the Amalekites had come in and destroyed their city and taken their families and belongings as spoils of war.

When David’s men realized that they had lost everything they become so angry and full of sorrow that they even talked about killing David. They were distressed and overwhelmed with the loss of all that they loved and lived for.

But here David stands out again. Instead of allowing the circumstances that he was in to destroy him, he went to God and encouraged himself in God and His promises. How easily this story could have been different if David had chosen to be like his men and just be discouraged and lose heart.

David knew that God is good and worthy of trust, so David went to God for encouragement.

We also must learn to encourage ourselves in the Lord. He is the only one that we can truly trust! Let us choose to encourage ourselves in the Lord no matter what happens in our lives. We have a good God that we can fully trust to do what is best!
